The airport opened to the public in May 2008 as an alternative to augmented congestion at HAL airport, the original primary commercial airport which served the city. It is named after Kempegowda I, the founder of Bangalore. Kempegowda International Airport, developed by CleanMax Solar, became Karnataka’s first fully solar-powered airport.
